Keith Farquhar Rover Catering

We also run a catering service we call ‘Keith Farquhar Rover Catering’. This service provides us with a crucial source of fundraising for the crew. It is also the perfect way for us to teach our newer Rovers how to cook and to allow them to develop vital teamwork and leadership skills. We have catered for various major scouting events in a wide range of conditions. (Scroll down to see some of our catering events)

Past Catering Events:

Here are some of our favourite catering events that we have done and would like to share:

Mucked Up Tails (MUT):
MUT has been the longest-running catering event for the crew. The camp itself is a Venturer-led zone camp for the Moonee Valley and Merribek-Daraben district scouts. MUT usually comprises of around 100-200 attendees with many different dietary requirements and is held in the forest campsite at Rowallan Scout Camp.

Over the past 10+ years, we have used MUT as a great opportunity to teach new rovers in the crew how to cater and cook for larger-scale events. We use scalable procedures with our catering that we’ve developed alongside the MUT committee to best enable us to run an efficient and safe kitchen.

We have also used MUT as an opportunity to work with local businesses and culinary professionals to develop new, healthy and cost-effective recipes that can be cooked in the restricted environment of a camp kitchen. One of these recipes is our famous “KFRC Mexican potatoes” that we often use because of its diverse yet simplistic recipe that works with a range of different dietary requirements.

Bunga Arm:
Bunga arm is a 10 day long sailing camp where everyone must sail to an island for the event. which we catered for in early 2024. The island on which the camp was held was isolated with no power, water, gas, or kitchen facilities

With a budget of $14,000, 134 attendees and 7 full days of catering we had over 2,800 meals to serve and 1,800 snacks!!!!

We achieved this by utilising a charter ship and barge to transport free-standing kitchen equipment such as BBQs, Ovens, stoves, tents tables and benches. As well as a truck and 3 trailors worth of other gear and food. We spend 2 weeks of prep leading up to this event, including a day trip working within a professional kitchen to prep some slow cooked pulled pork nachos

Winter Gathering:
Winter gathering is a 2 night camp ran for venturers where we cater for their committee. While it may not be the biggest catering event we have, Winter Gathering provides us with its own unique challenges being committee catering.

We have been working to develop ‘grab and go recipes’ which still contain all the parts of a full meal so that busy comittee members can eat on the go. These recipes have been difficult to perfect because of nature of easy to carry food.

Being a smaller catering event Winter gathering is also a great event to get newer rovers to assist and even lead because there aren’t large prep times, While our profits are generally a bit lower for Winter Gathering it still provides us with vital experience for our newer caterers, allowing us to succeed at the larger events.
